When you switch phones
When you move WhatsApp to another device or delete and reinstall the app, it asks for a new verification code. While the rental is running, that code lands in your panel too.

On WhatsApp the number is the account's identity. After you set the account up, the code still goes to that number when you move to a new phone, reinstall the app or WhatsApp asks you to re-verify for security. A one-time number is no longer yours by then. A rental number is reserved for you alone for the period you choose (1 day, 3 days, 1 week or 1 month), and every code from WhatsApp is listed in your panel.

If you want to try WhatsApp Business for a few days or weeks on a number separate from your personal one, a rental number is a safer start than a one-time number.
If you decide to keep the account long term, you can move it to a permanent number with WhatsApp's "Change number" feature before the rental ends.
If you will sign up only once and keep using the account on the same phone, the one-time number on the WhatsApp SMS verification page is cheaper and enough. If there is a chance of another code request in the days after sign-up — for example you will move the account to another device later, restore from a backup or open it on a teammate's phone — a rental number makes sure you do not miss those codes.
A WhatsApp rental number receives SMS from WhatsApp only. If you also plan to sign up for other services with the same number, look at the "All Apps" option described in the rental virtual number guide; note that it costs more and is available in fewer countries.
When the rental ends, the number stops being yours and may later be rented to another user. If that person tries to register WhatsApp with the same number, the code goes to them. So on the day you open the account, go to Settings → Account → Two-step verification in WhatsApp, set a six-digit PIN and add an email address. The PIN makes it harder for whoever gets the number later to take over your account, but once the number is no longer yours, the account's security is not entirely in your hands.
If you will use the account for a long time, there are two ways: extend the period before it ends, or move the account to a permanent number. WhatsApp's "Change number" feature moves the account, chats and groups to the new number; a verification code goes to the new number as well, and you do it while the account is still open on your phone with the old number. Not every number can be extended; if the extension option does not appear, do not put off the move.
WhatsApp does not restrict sign-up by country; price and stock are what decide. The live table below shows, for each period, the lowest-priced country right now and that offer's cancellation rule. In the same country a 1-month offer can cost far more than four times the 1-week one and may be non-cancellable; if you are planning for a long period, first read the comparison in the monthly virtual number guide.

Yes. A rental number for WhatsApp receives SMS codes from WhatsApp. Choose SMS verification at sign-up; the number does not receive voice calls.
If you will move the account to another device within a few days, 3 days or 1 week is usually enough. If you are keeping the account long term, starting with 1 week and extending before it ends, or moving to a permanent number, is usually more flexible than a monthly offer.
On offers that allow cancellation, if no SMS arrives within the free cancellation window you can cancel and get the amount back on your balance. After the first code it cannot be cancelled. Non-cancellable offers have no refund; the rule is shown when you pick and confirm.
No, the account keeps working on your phone. But the number is no longer yours; if WhatsApp asks for re-verification the code will not reach you, and whoever gets the number may try to register. That is why the PIN, an email and, if needed, "Change number" matter.
WhatsApp Business uses the same SMS verification, so it can be set up with a rental number. If you want a business number customers will reach for months, factor in that you lose the number when the rental ends and consider a permanent line.
